Why do we blow out candles on birthday cakes?

Birthday cake and candle is the must-have thing on a birthday.

Burnt candles decorated the cake as a representation of the radiance of the moon, while the smoke of the candles conveyed their prayers and good wishes to the gods living in the sky above them. Others associate the candles with the birthplace of birthday cakes, Germany. It is believed that a candle was placed on the cake as a symbol of the "light of life".

A typical modern western birthday party is now celebrated with cake, candles and a traditional birthday song. Most of the time, candles are used to represent the age of the person being celebrated. Then, the birthday boy or girl quietly blows out the candles while making a wish.
